jan 1, 508 BC - 508 BCE, Cleisthenes Creates Democracy
Description:
Democracy was another form of government that was proposed to represent the citizens, or men, of Athens regardless of social class. Proposed by the tyrant Cleisthenes, all Athenian men had the civil duty to participate in government by voting on issues and debating. This system was the first to directly represent citizens and use debates as a form of gathering support. These ideas would be carried forward throughout history to the present.
