Rome had fought three wars with Carthage, referred to as the Punic Wars. At the end of the third Punic war in 146 BCE, the Roman Republic had ruled the western Mediterranean Sea. Carthage began as a Phoenician trading colony in the ninth century BCE and grown to be a emporium for trade west and east.Until the Mamertines had clamored for help, Rome and Carthage had enjoyed relatively good relations. In the first Punic War, Rome had won half of Sicily from Hiero of Syracuse. The second Punic war,, the invasion of Italy by Hannibal and destruction of much of the Italian countryside. Over-all, Rome had defeated Carthage.
