aug 2, 1964 - Tonkin Gulf
Description:
The Tonkin Gulf Resolution was a joint resolution that was passed on August 7, 1964 because of the Tonkin Gulf Incident. It was passed because of an intentional attack on two U.S. naval destroyers along the coast of Vietnam. When it was brought to the House of Representatives, it passed unanimously. When it was brought to the Senate it had only two opposing votes. The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution is what effectively and officially launched America’s involvement in the war.
This is so important because this is what officially launched America’s involvement in the war. Without this, we would not have been involved, until later, or maybe ever. Our outcome with this war could have changed drastically if we would have entered at another time as well.
