It got the name Republic (Respublica) from the Latin word Res (meaning thing, affair) and Publicus/Publica (meaning public), making it that the republic was something that belonged to the people (really the citizen men), to the Romans this was called 'populus romanus'.

The city-state of Rome rapidly expanded, eventually controlling the Mediterranean World and a lot of Western Europe.
