- Major Charles Sweeney piloted the plane nicknamed "Bockscar"
- The bomb was intended to be dropped over Kokura, but after the crew encountered a large cloud over the city, they headed towards Nagasaki
- The bomb code-named "Fat Boy" flattened half of the city and by the end of the year, killed an estimated 200,000 people.
- The morning after the drop, the Japanese Emperor Hirohito was shocked by the damage. The bomb led to Hirohito ordering a formal surrender and an end to the war.
