The Enlightenment was a philosophical movement that focused on reason and not religion. It was an age of optimism, tempered by the realistic recognition of the sad state of human condition and the need for major reforms and change. It also included the belief that the universe could be understood through research and investigation- scientific method. All aspects of life- institutions, political systems, traditions- judged by bar of reason.
