jan 1, 1054 - The great schism

Description:

Following centuries of growing differences and tensions over doctrine, liturgical practices, and politics, the Churches of East and West issued a mutual excommunication. In 1976, Pope Paul VI and Patriarch Athenagorus I lifted the excommunication. Ecumenical efforts continue, in the hope that one day the two Churches will be united.
