The cotton gin was like the McCormick Reaper in the west. Invented in 1793, it's purpose was to separate cotton fiber from the seeds. The new quick way to produce a lot of cotton made it profitable. The invention of the cotton gin was tied to the southern economy. The cotton gin also increased slavery.(key concept 4.2, I)
