Like Jamestown where the main crop was tobacco, Sugar was primary crop in the Caribbean. Colonists also imported enslaved Africans to work sugar plantations. The demand for sugar was so high, there was a demand for slaves as well. In Barbados, enslaved Africans outnumber whites 3-1. In order to keep the slaves from rebelling, slave codes used to subjugate slave populations. This served as a template for North American slavery
