oct 24, 1612 - 3. Tobacco

Description:

A man from Jamestown, John Rolfe, an amateur botanist, cross-bred strains of local Virginia tobacco with Caribbean strains. The profitability attracted new settlers. Settlers began to grow the new crop everywhere. They left Jamestown to start tobacco farms elsewhere. The population grew, the popularity of tobacco grew, and so did slavery.
