Description:
The congress decided to draft a declaration of independence in June 1776. Richard Henry Lee, a statesman from Virginia stated, “The colonies are, and of right ought to be free and independent states.”. There was a committee of five that was chosen to draft the document. Those men included, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Roger Sherman, Robert Livingston, and Thomas Jefferson. Thomas Jefferson at the time was a Virginia lawyer and a slave holder, but was still chosen to draft the declaration. The Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4th, 1776.
