Jamestown was the first permanent English settlement in the present-day United States (1607). King James I gave the Virginia Company of London a charter for a New World Settlement. /The goal of this was to trade with the Indians./ All the men created a settlement on the James River. Thirty-eight out of one hundred and twenty survived the first nine months. The deaths were caused by disease, famine, warfare, and laziness.
