aug 9, 1587 - Roanoke
Description:
The English started a colony on Roanoke island and then ignored it for three years. The colony ended up being named Virginia for Queen Elizabeth. The governor of Roanoke came back to find the colony completely deserted. He and his men found no trace of the one hundred colonists that were there when he left, and there was no sign of violence that could make him think that they were killed. The only clue that was left on the island was a tree with the word “CROATOAN” carved on it.
