/The Black Legend is how other countries viewed and thought of Spain./ It remained very strong in the United States throughout the 19th Century. The legend was that Spain was very cruel and intolerant. The term was prevalent in the works of non-Spanish and Protestant Historians. The term Black Legend was popularized by the Spanish Historian Julien Juderias in his book La Leyenda Negra, which in English means, the Black Legend.
