jan 1, 1824 - 6. The American System
Description:
*When Monroe left office in 1824, there was a huge three way election between John Quincy Adams, Andrew Jackson, and Henry Clay.* No one managed to win a majority of the votes, however, and the House was to decide. However, Adams offered to make Speaker of the House Henry Clay into his Secretary of State. And so, Adams won, but he was extremely unpopular because of his corrupt bargain. While Adams was not great, Henry Clay managed to push for what was called the American system. It saw protective tariffs implemented, the creation of a Second National Bank, and a network of roads and canals throughout the Ohio Valley.
