jan 1, 1800 - 1. Revolution of 1800
Description:
*With the Constitution having been put in place, the position of President was a much bigger deal.* Washington was the first President, as he was very popular amongst all Americans. After him came John Adams, who shared some of Washington's ideas, but he was seen as being too extreme of a Federalist, especially with the passing of the Alien and Sedition acts. In 1800, when Adams was up for a reelection, political rival and prominent Democratic-Republican Thomas Jefferson beat Adams. With the Democratic-Republicans winning both the Executive and Legislative Branches, many thought there would be turmoil in the streets. But there wasn't, and instead there was a peaceful transfer of power.
