jan 1, 1766 - 2. Townshend Acts

Description:

Following the Seven Years war, which Britain, along with it's American colonies participated in, the UK was in great debt. In order to pay off that debt, they had no other options but to raise taxes on the American colonies. *The colonies did not react well to this, as they had been so used to Salutary Neglect that they thought of themselves as equal to the British.* This became a huge wake up call for the colonists, and they would form a deep animosity towards the British over the next decade and beyond.
