"Andrew Jackson was a general in the battle of New Orleans, a conflict in the War of 1812." This battle propelled him to fame and would help him win the presidency of the United States. Jackson would become known as a strong leader and substantially expanded the powers of the presidency. Jackson was also a supporter of American industry and commerce. For example, he put a tariff on goods like hemp, cotton, and iron in order to protect American industry from foreign competition.
