This is what people called the ascension of Thomas Jefferson to the presidency. Jefferson was the first democratic-republican elected to the presidency. It was also the first transfer of power between two political parties in the United States. Jefferson wanted to shift the focus of the nation towards creating an agrarian society rather than one based on commerce. He also wanted to enforce a more strict interpretation of the constitution.
