mar 14, 1685 - South Atlantic System
Description:
This was an economic system that helped produce cash crops in the southern colonies for Europe. These crops included sugar, tobacco, rice, and indigo. Plantations to grow these crops were mainly worked by slaves. Europe’s demand for these crops also increased the demand for slaves in the southern colonies. Eventually, slaves would outnumber colonists in the south. There was a need to keep control, so harsh treatment of slaves, such as whipping and branding, became common.
