jan 14, 1680 - Slavery
Description:
After Bacon’s Rebellion, the labor force shifted from indentured servants to being composed almost entirely of African slaves. Slaves were owned by their plantation owners and never got their freedom. This eliminated the chance of another rebellion similar to Bacon’s happening ever again, and the system of slavery also cut the cost of tobacco production since plantation owners did not have to pay for their workers after buying them. Slavery allowed the economy of the southern colonies, in particular, to thrive.
