aug 14, 1672 - Indentured Servants
Description:
The tobacco plantations were originally worked by indentured servants. These servants usually came to the new world through the the headright system or made themselves indentured servants as payment for passage to the new world. These servants worked for several years on a plot of land and then were freed. The influx of indentured servants solved the labor problem in the new plantations, but the indentured servants came to the new world poor and without guaranteed work. After they were freed, many became squatters.
