jan 14, 1629 - Southern Colonies
Description:
These were the southernmost colonies established by England. They included Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Maryland. Their economies were based on cash crops and originally relied on the labor of indentured servants to work the land. This led to an influx of squatters who were former indentured servants. They had no land to start their own farms. This influx also led to the creation of a whole class of people not represented in the government which was controlled by wealthy plantation owners.
