Description:
This labor system established by the monarchy of Spain gave the land, as well as the people populating it, to the conquistadors. The job of the conquistadores was to convert the indigenous people to Christianity and extract resources from the land. These resources included gold and silver. Colombus took control of an island in the Caribbean and implemented encomienda there. This system lasted for decades but would prove to be unsustainable.AP Key concepts 1.2, I, II
