Description:

Khrushchev threatened the United States on many occasions to arrange an agreement about making Berlin a free city, or some other outcome, or else the USSR would no longer be bound by the postwar agreements and would form a new one with East Germany. The U.S needed to maintain West Berlin, so they continually refused to have any sort of agreement. Overnight, the Berlin wall was built to prevent anyone from crossing over to West Berlin anymore.
