jan 1, 1765 - Stamp Act
Description:
This was the first time that Parliament attempted to raise money from direct taxes rather than through regulation of trade. Act required that all sorts of printed materials produced in the colonies carry a stamp purchased from English officials. It effected all free colonists, not just those in port cities (like the Sugar Act). It challenged the authority of local leaders, and the idea that the troops that were funded through the act would be stationed in the colonies was alarming. It was the first major split between Great Britain and the colonies.
