Description:

A law passed which divided the remaining territory of the Louisiana Purchase into the Kansas and Nebraska territories and declared that both of these new territories would decide whether to be a free-soil state or a slave state based on "popular sovereignty". This marks the beginning of Bleeding Kansas.
