jan 1, 1911 - Nucleus Discovery
Description:
Ernest Rutherford - discovered the nucleus of the atom.
Ernest Rutherford and his coworkers conducted an experiment intended to determine the angles through which a beam of alpha particles (helium nuclei) would scatter after passing through a thin foil of gold also known as the gold foil experiment. A small central core (the nucleus) houses the positive charge and most of the mass of the atom. It tells us that the atom is mostly empty space with a tiny, dense positively charged nucleus.
