mar 31, 1871 - 3rd Russian
Jewish Pogrom
Odessa 1871
Description:
Despite the rate of increase of anti-Semitism in Odessa, Jewish businesses and population continued to grow.
By 1871, not only the Greeks were claiming to feel threatened, but the local Russian population was starting to be more and more agitated.
So, although the pogrom of 1871 was brought about by the rumour that Jews had vandalised the Greek community's church, many non Greeks and particularly local Russians joined in the purge.
Russian resentment and hostility came to the fore in 1871 and thereafter, Russians became the main protagonists in pogroms against the Jews, partly due to the decline in the Greek population.
