The first African slaves were brought to America by slave ships. Juan de Córdoba was the first to send many of his African slaves from Spain to Hispaniola. This caused more slaves to be taken from Africa and forcefully against their will put into manual labor in the Americas. Slavery continued in America until 1865 until Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation to set free all slaves.Added to timeline:
