feb 7, 1497 - The Bonfire of the Vanities
Description:
The people of Florence had determined that most of their valuable belongings were not creating joy, but causing many sins. A burning of these things took place headed by Girolamo Savonarola. He spent the early 1490s speaking out to crowds in Florence about his prophecies, ideas, and exhortations for listeners to free themselves from their sins. Many people, especially young men, listened to his speeches and were attracted to his theology, which declared a new order, and a rejection of the former leaders who ran the city.
