The Magnetophon tape recorder was one of the first recording machines to use magnetic tape in preserving voice and music. However, early Magnetophons gave disappointing results, leaving too much distortion on the playback after recording instruments. The earlier Magnetophons were used to play back speech over tanoy systems rather than music, until the 1970's when chromium dioxide tapes were used, which reduced almost all of the distortion that was found on the iron oxide Fe3 O4 and Fe2 O3 types.
