jan 1, 1916 - Drones
Description:
The first drone was made by A.M. Low and was used as an aerial target. After World War I, many companies worked to push drone technology further. Inventions like the first pilotless torpedo showed that drone technology had a lot of potential.
1935 saw the first civilian to use a remotely piloted vehicle. During World War II, both sides used drones to train aircraft gunners and aid in missions. However, after the war ended, new drone technology came to a halt until the start of the Vietnam war.
During the Vietnam war, the U.S. Air Force used unmanned aircrafts to cut down on pilot deaths over hostile territory. By the last 1960s, the U.S. government had invested in and used drone technology throughout Vietnam and aid in naval missions, however most of these missions were classified.
The first use of drones for non-military ventures started in 2006. It was the same year that the Federal Aviation Administration issued its first commercial drone permit. In 2013 Amazon announced it would use drones for delivery.
Drones are really helpful for filmmakers as they allow them to achieve shots that would be very difficult to attain if drones didn't exist. A great example is establishing shots. These are often shot higher up and the drone allows you to precisly see where you want the camera without having to hire expensive equipment such as a helicopter.
