Milk was the first openly gay politician in California politics. He was the City Supervisor in San Francisco in '78 when he and the SF mayor were assassinated. After the assassin was convicted for manslaughter, riots broke out. Milk became a martyr for the cause of gay rights and remains their most prominent figure.
