mar 8, 1509 - The Beginning of the Takeover of Spice Trade
A Portuguese armada defeated a fleet of Turkish and Indian ships off the coast of India, and the Portuguese began to block off the flow of spices to Muslim rulers by creating a blockade on the entrance to the Red Sea.
Cultural Impetus: They wanted to spread Christianity, and did not want Muslims to have any money or success.
