jan 1, 1680 - Fulani Enter Western Africa
Description:
Unlike the manner of practice observed in northern Africa, Islam in sub-Saharan Africa was more lenient and informal, concerning many devout Muslims. Most notable were the Fulani, a Muslim group which had observed a pastoral lifestyle for centuries and a much stricter form of Islam. Beginning around 1680, they led a series of military campaigns to establish Islamic states and spread their form of Islam.
