Description:
Proposition 58 was passed in California in 2016. This act repealed Proposition 227 which was passed in 1998 banning bilingual education in California schools. Instead proposition 58 focuses on using a Childs first language to accelerate the development of academic English.Research showed that teaching subject matter in a students first language allowed for more mastery of subject matter which improved comprehension and providing more English language acquisition.
Proposition 58 gave schools the ability to choose the right programs for their ENL students weather it be English emersion classrooms or bilingual education.
