jun 15, 2012 - Dream Act/ DACA

Description:

Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals-

DACA was created by Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano to provide temporary relief from deportation and work authorization to certain young undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children. Under this act immigrants have the ability to obtain social security numbers and a drivers' license to work. This act provided almost 800,000 young adults the ability to work lawfully and attend schools. DACA must be renewed every two years. DACA does not give permanent legal status, U.S. citizenship, or federal financial aid towards schooling. This act is only a temporary fix to help immigrants work and live in the U.S. On September 5, 2017 DACA stopped accepting new applicants.

The Dream Act

The DREAM Act (Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors) is a more lasting solution for those who were minors when they entered the country illegally. The DREAM Act would give them the chance to permanently earn citizenship through a few different options including "college, maintain a job, or serve in the U.S. military" (DACA and Dream Act 101, 2020). Although the DREAM Act would be a more permanent solution, it "has been introduced repeatedly but has not yet become law" (DACA and Dream Act 101, 2020).
