Description:

The "English in Public Schools" Initiative, Prop 227 eliminated bilingual education programs in favor of structured English immersion (SEI) classes. EL students were generally not to be enrolled in SEI for longer than a year before transitioning to mainstream classes. Exceptions permitted students to continue in bilingual education by active opt-in by parents and with agreement from school administrators and teachers. The prop provided 10 years of funding for tutors for EL students. It was repealed with the passage of Prop 58.
