On May 29, 1453, Constantinople fell to invading Ottoman forces as part of a series of conflicts known as the Byzantine-Ottoman wars. With the capture of this city, marking the decisive end of the Byzantine Empire, and as the last successor state of the Roman Empire, the end of a nearly 1500-year-old political continuation. Additionally, this defeat dealt a massive blow to Christendom, as the seat of the Eastern Orthodox Church had been captured by Islam.
