oct 21, 1492 - Colombus' First Sighting of the Americas
Description:
In 1492, the Catholic Monarchs of early Spain funded Christopher Columbus' voyage westwards in an effort to find a new route to Asia. However, during his journey he caught sight of the Americas which very profoundly affected subsequent history. He was not the first to discover the Americas; natives had lived there for thousands of years prior. He was not even the first European to do so; the Norse explorer Leif Erikson had done so around the year 1000 and even established a short-lived settlement in present day Newfoundland. However, this sighting began a massive European exploration and colonization of the Americas that influenced global politics from then onwards.
