16h 45min, oct 19, 1813 y - Defeat at Liepzig in
the Battle of Nations
Description:
An allied force of 320 000 men consisting of Austrian, Prussian, Russian, and Swedish troops converge on Napoleon’s army of 185 000 at Leipzig in Saxony. Initially, the armies attack one by one, allowing Napoleon to hold them off. However, the armies unite and muster up their force into one attack. Napoleon’s army is overwhelmed and in the wee hours of the morning on October 19, a retreat is ordered. However, the single bridge that the troops are using to escape is destroyed by a spooked french corporal, stranding 30 000 Frenchmen in Leipzig, who are taken prisoner by allied troops. The french army also sustains losses of 38 000 men dead or wounded. This crushing defeat ends Napoleon’s empire east of the Rhine.
