Description:

In the encomienda system, the monarch gave the land and Natives who lived there to the conquistadors who would convert them to Christianity and then use them for labor. **This was a form of slavery that produced large amounts of corn, sugar, and gold that was transported from the New World to the Old World.** This system was short-lived because the disease from the Old World greatly reduced the native population which ushered in the asiento system where African slaves were transported to the colonies to do the work that the natives once did.
