encourage confession, informing on neighbours
Summons those who are named, questions them
Do take in consideration that neighbours might be dicks
ideally : confession, renunciation of false belief, penance
But if accused is stubborn they get tortured
if people wont confess they are made to confess
Pope gives them the authority to torture people
Thinks the pain will produce truth
Even people in the 13th century thought it was stupid
Secular authories also used torture

Had to wear a badge - humiliation = become social outcast
Might have to fast
Give 3 hail merries
Go on a pilgrimage
In extreme cases there would be imprisonment
If they had been convicted twice - they were handed over to secular authority to be executed
Was probably only like 2 a year in europe
