9h 30min, feb 13, 2008 y - Kevin Rudd's Apology Speech

Description:

On 9:30 am, 13 February 2008, former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd gave an apology speech to the Stolen Generations, a long and cruel period of suffering which meant stealing Aboriginal children away from their true roots, and training them to act 'white'. Finally, after years of ignorance (the incumbent PM at the time, John Howard, refused to apologise), PM Kevin Rudd made a difference as he gave his sorry speech to the Stolen Generations. In fact, John Howard insisted that there wasn't even any genocide against the Aboriginals, and he actually had the audacity to apologise to homeowners about the rising interest rates, but not to the Aboriginal Australians, stubbornly saying that all of those decades, even generations, of abuse, 'never existed'. Kevin Rudd knew it all really did happen, though, and when he became the Prime Minister, he issued a formal apology to the Stolen Generations. Kevin Rudd's official apology was only a few minutes long, with a 20-minute speech afterwards regarding the need for action, but minutes cannot make up for centuries of cruelty since Australia's colonisation, but it was the first step in bridging the cold gap between the First Nations people and those involved in the Stolen Generations and many more appalling events such as 'manhunts' for the Indigenous Australians, not to mention bringing the people of Australia a little closer as we gave respect and apology to the Aboriginal people.
