By the mid-eighteenth century, the majority of Westfielders owned slaves and slavery becomes a normal part of Westfield life. Westfield resident Cornelius Hetfield trades slaves in Elizabethtown and Reverend Benjamin Woodruff of the Presbyterian Church records the baptism of one of his slaves. Westfield slave owners, including Corbet Scudder and Noah Marsh, post advertisements in local newspapers for their runaway slaves.
