Colonel William Prescott and Colonial Militias had fortified Breed's Hill and planned to take Bunker Hill but, but British troops attacked before they could. The Patriots lost, but British casualties were more than three times the number of Patriot casualties, giving the Patriots hope and showing the British that the war would not be over quickly.
