nov 30, 1854 - The Eureka Stockade

Description:

In the Victorian town of Ballarat, on November 30, 1854, the Eureka Stockade occurred. During the stockade, there were many miners and gold diggers looking for gold. The Eureka Stockade started because many miners thought that the laws were unfair. Some miners refused to pay for licences and was unwilling to use the licence, so they burnt it. They couldn’t claim the land that they were working on, and could be told off at any time. They would have to change working spots even if they felt that their old spot could help them find gold and have a Eureka moment. 500 miners gathered under the Eureka flag that day, and they swore to fight against the police. The Eureka Stockade became the birth of Australian democracy because of all the miner’s courage and determination on their rights. It also created the greatest victories for equality in Australian history.
