This is the day England approved Australia's Federation, 1st January 1901. This marked the day Australia finally became a nation! Before Australia federated, it consisted of several colonies with their own systems. This made it especially hard to trade across colonies as you were required to pay a tariff. After federation, it was much easier to trade within different 'states'.
