dec 3, 1851 - The Eureka Stockade

Description:

The goldfields were soon crowded with people, but the easily-found surface gold quickly started to dwindle, and miners had to pay taxes for a mining licence. These fees soon enlarged and disgruntled miners did not strike lucky on most days. They were not earning enough gold to be able to pay the fees, so many of them evaded the law. Soon enough, on 30 November, they swore an oath and built a stockade. On Sunday 3 December, when the stockade was lightly guarded, soldiers stormed the stockade which resulted in a giant fight. At least 22 diggers and 6 soldiers were killed in the battle.
